Dear Fringer,
Recently a group of right-wing crackpots, with the backing of the Canadian Alliance, have been lobbying Sheila Copps and the Ministry of Canadian Heritage to suspend all funding of all Fringe Festivals across the country.
Judging the merits of the Fringes based solely on the shock value of the titles of a minimal number of plays, these crackpots have accused Canadian Heritage of funding "pornography". These complaints have gone largely ignored until now. However, with a federal election looming in the near future and Canadian Heritage grant applications being considered as you read this, it is clear that in order to protect this crucial funding, we must begin our own lobbying campaign.
If you support the Fringe Festival and don't want to see our funding cut because of a few small-minded rednecks, please write a letter of support to:

Récemment, un groupe (avec le support de l'Alliance Canadienne) a commencé une campagne pour convaincre Sheila Copps, la ministre de Patrimoine canadienne, à couper toute subvention à tous les festivals Fringe canadiens.
En portant jugement sur les festivals Fringe basé seulement sur les titres de quelques pièces présentées au festival Fringe, ce groupe accuse Patrimoine canadienne d'avoir subventionn la "pornographie"! Ces plaintes n'ont pas reçu l'écoute de la ministre - jusqu'à maintenant: une élection fédérale s'en vient dans le futur proche, et Patrimoine est en train de considérer les demandes de subvention pour l'édition 2001 du Fringe, en ce moment même. C'est claire que, afin de protéger cette subvention essentielle, nous devons nous défendre auprès de Mme Copps.
Si vous croyez en l'esprit du festival Fringe, et ne voulez que la subvention soit coupée, s.v.p. écrivez un lettre d'appui à Mme Copps et nous l'envoyer chez notre bureau. Une fois toutes les lettres en main, nous les enverrons au ministère du Patrimoine canadienne.
